EXCLUSIVE: Elizabeth Warren pledges to lead on LGBT rights

bencrowther:

Elizabeth Warren, who is running to unseat U.S. Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.), pledged to support a series of pro-LGBT initiatives and called on President Obama to endorse marriage equality in an exclusive interview with the Washington Blade on Tuesday.

Warren endorsed the idea of an executive order from President Obama that would require companies doing business with the U.S. government to have LGBT-inclusive non-discrimination policies for their workers.

“Any steps that the president can take toward non-discrimination benefit the whole country,” Warren said. “I don’t know how else to say it. It’s the right thing to do.”

The measure is sometimes referred to as the “ENDA” executive order because its effect would be similar to the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, but limited to federal contractors. The White House hasn’t said whether it will issue the directive.

Warren called on President Obama to complete his now 17-month-old “evolution” and endorse marriage equality. She also said she supports the call for a marriage equality plank in the Democratic Party platform this September.

Asked whether she wants Obama to finish evolving and support same-sex marriage, Warren chuckled and responded that was indeed her view.

“I want to see the president evolve because I believe that is right; marriage equality is morally right,” Warren said.

Here’s a photo I snapped of Elizabeth Warren speaking to Fenway Health staff.
Fenway Health works to enhance the wellbeing of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and all people in our neighborhoods and beyond through access to the highest quality health care, education, research and advocacy.
Elizabeth Warren toured Fenway’s location at 1340 Boylston Street, learned more about the services they provide as well as LGBT health and HIV/AIDS research, answered questions from staff, and spoke about the role social justice plays in her political platform.

$5.7 million in fundraising last quarter…yep I’d be smiling too, Elizabeth Warren! Not to mention gushing praise from Rolling Stone:

What She’s Done As chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel, Warren exposed the Bush administration for giving big banks a secret handout worth $78 billion. Then she midwifed the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau into law, creating a host of new protections for average Americans. Now, attempting to oust Wall Street darling Scott Brown, Warren has unabashedly embraced Occupy Wall Street’s fight to hold the nation’s big banks accountable for their crimes. “There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own,” says Warren, a registered Republican into her forties. “Nobody.”
Gives Us Pause Her intelligence and solution-oriented approach may be wasted on the Senate.

Warren raised $5.7m last quarter
- Democratic Senate contender Elizabeth Warren raised the sum in the final three quarters of 2011 - nearly doubling Scott Brown’s fund-raising from the same period.

As other states grapple with whether to support marriage equality, I’m ready to move to the next step: End the two-tiered system created by the Defense of Marriage Act. Our federal government should not be in the business of selecting which married couples it supports and which it treats with contempt. States define marriage among couples, and, once married, all those couples and their families should have the same protections, the same benefits, and the same tax treatments. Fairness and equality are foundational values in our country, and nowhere is that more important than in our families.
In the workplace, people should be hired for what they can do and evaluated on their performance – period. I strongly support the fully inclusive Employee Non-Discrimination Act. Particularly in these uncertain times, people must have confidence that they will be judged on the merits. Again, this speaks to the fairness and equality that mark us as a people.
Finally, Massachusetts has been a leader in combating the rise of bullying. After college, I taught elementary school and saw first hand how important it is for kids to learn in a safe and welcoming environment. We need to help teachers and administrators create and foster an environment that welcomes students and their families, whether kids are being raised in a single parent household, by their grandparents, or by their lesbian moms or gay dads. All children – straight, questioning, perceived, gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender – can thrive in school only when they are truly safe and secure.

Elizabeth Warren is my hero.

The Elizabeth Warren campaign has come out with some pretty rad t-shirts that say “The Best Candidate Money Can’t Buy.” You can get one here. You can buy one even if you don’t live in Massachusetts.

She’s back!

A new parody of Elizabeth Warren’s campaign video.

“I’ve been criticized for admitting that I throw rocks on behalf of the middle class. Clearly, I misspoke. I don’t throw rocks. I throw fucking boulders.”

Warren was swarmed by a trio of college students. There was actual shrieking. When I observed to Warren that she has fangirls, she replied, “I know,” with a self-assuredness that female candidates have often found difficult to convey.

from the New York Times Magazine article Heaven Is a Place Called Elizabeth Warren

Reading this made me feel slightly less awkward about telling her that I love her when I met her. Slightly.
